Exact Sciences by Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects | Commercial Photographer San Diego
During my time as a commercial photographer in San Diego, I’ve shot my fair share of unique spaces. While I think I’ve seen it all when it comes to creative architecture, designs like this always surprise me. My client FPBA provided design services to convert an existing office space into a research & development center for Exact Sciences.
These commercial photographs capture the open office and collaboration areas along with the laboratory spaces to highlight how they all intersected.
How I Planned The Commercial Lab And Office Photoshoot
Throughout this entire project, I felt inspired by the architectural goal to connect people within a workspace. In person, it’s easy to tell the care that went into the redesign, but capturing it in a commercial photograph requires a specific eye.
Knowing that the goal was to intersect the spaces, I found angles that would bring it to life! I chose to shoot in a way that would focus on showing how the spaces connected to each other, like the phone booths next to the cool staircase and the private offices lining the sides of the open office area.
Capturing The Open Office Spaces
When it came to the office spaces, there were so many design details I wanted to capture, from the lighting to the furniture. Normally trying to get so many details all in one shot can be a challenge, but the key is to create unique angles. This allows the shot to highlight the design in the best way, all while encompassing as many of the details as possible.
It can feel daunting trying to perfectly photograph all the important aspects of a commercial space. This is where the value of hiring an experienced photographer comes in to save the day! I use my personal eye and experience from shooting multiple office spaces for different types of clients.
When it comes to showing spaces like break rooms, bringing people into the shots always adds life into the space, instead of having an empty room. I like to embody the feel of how it would look when the people that will be sitting in the rooms would use them in their daily routine.
Taking it a step further, I wanted to accentuate not just the amenities within each space, but the architecture as well. This project focused so much on the details, even the ceiling felt important to highlight!
Highlighting the LaboratorIES
The goal throughout the entire commercial photoshoot was to also highlight the lab spaces. I wanted to find angles that showcase all of the equipment in a clean way, yet still keep the theme of space intersection present.
Shooting next to the windows proved to be perfect! The window frames mirrored the flawless black countertops, yet provided contrast to the greenery right outside. I love how the integrity of the laboratory stayed intact, but nature grounded the space and never let it feel sterile.
As for the equipment itself, leaning into the black and white colors allowed for the laboratory to truly feel state of the art. I made sure to find angles that highlighted each shade without washing one or the other out.
Haley’s Pro Tip: Natural lighting is every photographer’s best friend! My favorite part of shooting this project was the endless natural light seeping through the big windows (especially in the kitchen/break room) throughout the workspace. Instantly I knew I wanted to use that to my advantage while I captured those spots- it truly showed the spaces perfectly!
