Interior And Exterior Photoshoots: Do I Do Both?

Over the years of working as a professional photographer, it feels like I’ve worked on every project imaginable. From restaurants and hotels to residential and commercial, each photoshoot is completely unique except for two factors: their interior and exterior.

Although some photographers don’t believe shooting the interior and exterior of a property is necessary, I’m here to wholeheartedly disagree! I’ve always loved creating a whole view of a singular property, no matter the extra work it requires. Without any further introduction, let’s dive in and discuss all things relating to working on interior and exterior photoshoots.

Why Capture Both Interior And Exterior?

When it comes to showcasing a property, whether it's a cozy home or a stunning architectural masterpiece, capturing both the interior and exterior is vital. Each aspect tells its own story and contributes to the overall visual narrative.

First, let's talk about interiors. They hold the soul of a space. Interior photos allow us to highlight the design elements, unique features, and deliberate atmospheres that the architecture works so hard to create. From capturing the play of light through large windows to showcasing intricate details, interior shots have the power to transport viewers into the heart of a property.

Exterior Residential Photography

On the other hand, exterior photos give us a glimpse of the grandeur, location, and overall appeal of the project at hand. These shots set the stage and create that all-important first impression. Exterior photography captures the essence of a property in its context, showcasing the interplay between architecture and its surroundings. It allows viewers to imagine themselves in the environment deliberately created for them.

The Power of Storytelling

One of the reasons I wholeheartedly believe in doing both interior and exterior photoshoots is their combined ability to tell a captivating story. By showcasing the total perspective, you can create a visual journey that takes viewers from the inviting entrance through each meticulously designed room, all the way to the breathtaking outdoor spaces.

No matter the experience of the photographer, the element of storytelling is what sets the average apart from the extraordinary. Looking to hone in on how to accomplish this skill? Let’s work on it together through my consulting services! I will work 1-on-1 with you to ensure in no time you’re a master at capturing the unspoken elements of a shoot.

To put it simply, we all love a good story. We want to be transported, to feel connected, and to imagine ourselves in a different place. Photoshoots have the power to do this, no matter the project! By showcasing both the interior and exterior, I can guide a seamless narrative, evoking emotions and satisfying the client’s vision.

Practicality wise, capturing both perspectives provides a comprehensive view of the property. Potential buyers, visitors, or admirers want to get a sense of the entire package. They want to see the harmony between the indoor and outdoor spaces, helping to picture themself within the established atmosphere.

Challenges and Solutions For Interior And Exterior Photoshoots

Of course, this storytelling is not simple when it comes to interior and exterior photoshoots. Each comes with its own set of challenges, but after years of working in every condition imaginable, I have a set of go-to solutions.

Interior photoshoots often require careful consideration of lighting. Balancing natural and artificial light sources can be tricky, but with some experimentation and the use of additional lighting equipment, you can bring out the best in every room. Staging and decluttering are also essential to create a clean, inviting atmosphere that appeals to clients.

When it comes to exterior photography, weather conditions can be unpredictable. Embrace the elements and use them to your advantage. A cloudy sky can create a moody atmosphere, while a sunny day can accentuate vibrant colors. Timing is crucial as well. I dedicate at least an entire day’s worth of sun positions to make sure I am experimenting with all the lighting options possible.

So… Do I Shoot Both?

Absolutely I shoot both the interior and exterior of a project! By capturing both perspectives, I can create a compelling visual story that engages viewers and showcases the full potential the client imagined. To sum it up quickly, interior photos highlight the soul of a space, while exterior shots set the stage and create a lasting first impression. What’s not to love!
