Kilroy Realty Commercial Property | San Diego Commercial Photography
No matter the San Diego commercial photography shoot, I always jump at the opportunity to try something new. Through this project with Kilroy Realty, I had the pleasure of centering an entire day around all the unique development details throughout the property.
Kilroy Realty and I both decided early on we wanted the shoot to have a sense of liveliness to it. Both the interior and exterior were the perfect balance of luxury and serenity, so the photos needed to reflect the same vibe.
How I Planned This Commercial Photography Shoot
Like many San Diego commercial shoots, one of my biggest considerations is lighting. This property included both interior and exterior spaces, so managing my time with natural sunlight is essential. I structured my day to prioritize softer lighting for outdoor areas, leaving more flexibility during harsher hours for interior shots.
The other biggest factor to consider are people in photos. This property was lively with guests for the majority of the day, but I wanted to include staged shots to showcase specific details. To accomplish this, I worked during off-times and pre-planned angles to keep things moving quickly.
Kilroy Realty and I both loved the idea of blurred subjects in certain shots to help elevate livelier areas. This is a personal favorite in any commercial shoot! Before any blurring work, I make sure to test my camera settings in advance to ensure everything runs smoothly. Everything was ready to go and the shoot day ran smoothly!
Highlighting The Fitness Center
Many commercial photography shoots focus on the fitness amenities, but I’ve never seen a gym as elevated as this! My favorite part is the really cool murals acting as a backdrop to the atrium area. I focused on using corner angles and holding the cameras at eye-level to capture what each guest would see.
The amenities in the gym were beautiful and felt extremely luxurious. To make sure the locker rooms were free of guests, I got to the property before it opened and made sure to work quickly. While I wanted to stay as long as possible, the soft lighting outside was too important to waste!
Showcasing The Calming Water Installations
The water installations throughout the entire property were absolutely gorgeous! They were so impressive in size, yet provided the most calming atmosphere. For the water art specifically, I tried to step back as far as possible to get as much of the installation in the photo as possible.
The walkways between each water feature were incredibly beautiful as well. For these spaces specifically, I started by spending a few minutes and really taking in the calming atmosphere. Once I felt gravitated to a certain location and angle, I let my lens do the work!
Haley’s Pro Tip: Let the space speak to you before immediately taking photos. If your main goal is to capture the vibe of the location you’re working with, give yourself time to get comfortable in the environment.
Filling The Space With Life
For commercial photography shoots with an environment as fun as this, it’s essential to fill the space with life. Kilroy Realty emphasized how important each development detail was to the entire property, so we agreed blurring shots were the way to go.
I was lucky enough to have my clients agree to be my models! To ensure everyone’s time was used efficiently, the camera settings were pre programmed, and I quickly worked through each angle I knew would work well. While this can be a stressful situation, as an experienced commercial photographer it’s an exciting challenge!
