Mojave Express Ft. Irwin | California Architectural Photography

Every photography project has its own unique vibe, but some just stand out as true game-changers. When Architects West reached out to me for their Mojave Express project at Fort Irwin, I jumped at the chance. Not only was this my first time photographing on a military base (how cool is that?), but it was also an opportunity to capture a space designed to blend modern functionality with the needs of the military community. Add in the collaboration with Coffman Engineers and DCI Engineers, and I knew this project was going to be one for the books.

Inside the Mojave Express Project

Mojave Express is an all-new retail space that serves as a key resource for the community at Fort Irwin. With a focus on modern architecture, the design needed to balance functionality with inviting aesthetics. Architects West had a detailed vision, requesting everything from sweeping exterior views to close-up shots of architectural details.

How I Planned the Photoshoot: Beyond Basics

For this project, I wanted to bring the best of California architectural photography to the table. Here’s how I approached it:

  • Exterior Shots: Capturing the building's full scope, from the entry sign to the gas pump canopy, was key. I also highlighted the striking masonry block pattern that wraps around the building for that extra architectural “wow” factor. Whether it’s big-picture shots or detailed close-ups, finding that balance is what sets Southern California architectural photographers apart.

  • Interior Highlights: The interior needed to showcase the retail shelving, coolers, and food counters, all while emphasizing the natural light streaming through the high translucent panels. I raised my tripod as high as it could go to get those above-eye-level shots that really showcase the layout. It’s all about finding creative angles that make people feel like they’re in the space themselves.

Photographing on a Military Base: A New Challenge

Being a Los Angeles architectural photographer used to urban landscapes and commercial buildings, this was my first time on a military base. That came with unique challenges, like adhering to strict security protocols and maintaining privacy. Capturing people in the space while keeping faces out of focus added a layer of complexity that made the shoot even more rewarding.

We love working with Interior Designers, Architecture Firms, Engineers, Real Estate Developers, and Construction Businesses to capture the latest and greatest buildings.

While we’re based out of San Diego, California, you can frequently catch us traveling to work with new clients.

Key Highlights of the Shoot

Exterior Details

The exterior shots of Mojave Express were all about showing off the building’s character. The masonry block pattern was a standout element, so I shot it from different angles to play up the texture and design. The food truck court added a dynamic element, especially during the busy lunch hour, giving the space a lively, community-focused feel.

Interior Views

The interior shots aimed to highlight the thoughtful design that caters to both functionality and style. I focused on wide views that show the retail area in its full scope and made sure to capture the natural light flooding the space. High-angle shots helped give a sense of the store's layout and size, essential for Southern California architectural photography where showcasing the flow of space is key.

The Dusk Glow

Dusk shots are some of my favorites, and Mojave Express didn’t disappoint. The way the canopy lit up and the soft glow from inside created a welcoming atmosphere that made the space feel alive and inviting.

Photographing Mojave Express was a creative and challenging experience that pushed me in new ways. This project is more than just a retail space; it’s a hub designed for the Fort Irwin community, crafted with intention by Architects West, Coffman Engineers, and DCI Engineers. It was an honor to capture its story through my lens.

Haley Hill

I am Haley Hill, a thirty something year old Fuji photographer capturing all of the things; food, architecture, events, you name it, I’ll shoot it (except your wedding, I’ll leave that to Still Music). When I’m not snapping pics, you can find me in the ocean, at Corepower or rapping in my band Girlboy.
