Scripps Clinic by SmithGroup | Interior Photographer San Diego
No matter how many commercial spaces I shoot as an interior photographer, they never grow old. Each space is carefully designed for the business and clients in mind, making it such a joy to highlight all the unique details. Scripps Clinic by SmithGroup is no different!
Their clinic occupies 40,000sqft. across two floors, including spaces like Family Medicine, Neurology, Dermatology, Orthopedics, Optometry, and more. The goal of this shoot is to showcase as many of these spaces as possible, highlighting different views that showed each detail with and without people.
How I Planned The Interior Clinic Photoshoot
The moment I sat down to plan this shoot, I knew the most important objective was to create a warm atmosphere within the clinic. Scripps Clinic worked tirelessly to create a friendly healthcare experience, so capturing the inviting nature of the space was very important.
The second key objective was to plan out how to work with all the space available! Although each room of the interior was photogenic, I had to prioritize the rooms that were most important. Every interior photography project comes with its own set of challenges, but projects such as these allow me to fall in love with capturing images all over again.
Highlighting Specific Rooms Within The Clinic
Throughout the seemingly endless rooms available to capture, the blood draw lab immediately spoke to me. Many people fear this type of healthcare above all else, so Scripps Clinic created a beautiful space to aid patient anxiety. I used natural light and specific angles to recreate the feeling of calm present throughout the entire space.
While it may not be the typical room, the hallways were my favorite areas to photograph! There are distinct design patterns and elements throughout the hallways, so I had to determine which areas looked the best or most unique. Personally, I was drawn to the sliding wood doors, so I made sure to include them in as many shots as I could to show the natural feel throughout the space.
Showcasing Heavily Trafficked Areas
The two lobbies were also a big feature to capture since they see the most patients out of the entire clinic. Knowing this, I made sure to capture one floor looking into the lobby from the window to emulate the feel of actually entering the space. After tinkering with the perfect angles to get the best shot, I moved onto the second floor.
I loved how the second lobby windows gave a powerful indoor-outdoor feel. I shot with this in mind to have this floor look out into the windows for a different point of view. Despite both serving the same conventional purpose, each lobby feels unique in its own way!
When it comes to the employees at Scripps Clinic, I wanted to highlight their modern spaces as well. Though break rooms may seem boring, the fun blue cabinets provided a colorful pop! Just like the lobbies, the break room showcases stunning windows that really ground the space. While the focus is on the amenities available to staff, I found the perfect angle to display the beautiful outdoor scenery.
Bringing The Interior To Life
When it comes to capturing interior projects, my expertise and experience ensures healthcare projects portray an inviting and relaxing space. I make sure to follow the natural light and shadows so each space is illuminated correctly without feeling cold.
Haley’s Pro Tip: Adding images with people in action gives the new patients and patrons a feel of how it will be when they visit the Scripps Clinic. I love how every space became more inviting once patients and healthcare professionals were brought in!
It truly was such a pleasure to photograph Scripps Clinic and capture the positive healthcare options they provide to all patients. No matter the interior photography project, I aim to lean into the unique details to create the perfect shot.
