Commercial Photography | San Diego Rescue Mission by Ware Malcomb
As a commercial photographer in San Diego, I enjoy the opportunity to get up-close-and-personal with tons of fantastic architectural designs and remodels. Although I never cease to be amazed with what can be accomplished, I must say that the San Diego Rescue Mission felt truly special.
San Diego Rescue Mission has served the community since 1955, providing emergency shelter and services to help people get back on their feet. When I had the opportunity to witness and photograph the transformation of this space, I was deeply touched. As you can see, Ware Malcomb did a fantastic job of transforming this project into a welcoming, homey environment where people can feel safe and secure during their stay.
How I Planned this Interior Photography Project
Ware Malcomb did a lot of work on the building, including renovations of common areas like the lobby/reception space, intake, meeting areas, restrooms, and training room. Additionally, they completed 70 dorm-style rooms for safe, comfortable residency. Although this was technically a commercial photography project, I also needed to treat it with a soft, residential lens, as the Rescue Mission serves as home to many during the most difficult times of their lives.
Ultimately, my goal was to capture the space in a way that would reflect its welcoming charm and supportive environment. This meant focusing on the little details that make the Rescue Mission feel light, vibrant, and like home.
Capturing the Common Areas
When shooting the common areas, I wanted to emphasize how the space flows, while still featuring clear divisions and unique spaces. I also wanted to highlight the work done on interior finishes designed to make the space feel more welcoming and less “corporate.” Finally, I had a goal to emphasize the generosity of the community by capturing the warm furnishings and materials used - most of which were donated from local vendors. While a series of donated items could have the potential to appear random and lack cohesion, this project is the embodiment of San Diego coming together to create an inviting, harmonious space that the community can take pride in.
Highlighting the Dorm Spaces
The primary objective of this shoot was to highlight the San Diego Rescue Mission’s transformation into a modern but welcoming space that feels like a home away from home. This meant it was very important to capture the best angles for interior photography within the dorm spaces. I wanted to demonstrate the size, creature comforts, amenities, and warmth of these spaces. I focused on the stunning accent wall and put emphasis on the light colors used for bedding and private storage for residents. It was also important to me to zero in on personal touches, like art pieces, a warm area rug, and details in the bedding, that make each dorm feel special.
Haley’s Hints: For small spaces, like a dorm room, take the time to find the best angles that capture most of the space. Oftentimes, you’ll have to use two angles to capture it all, but focus on what looks the best in the lens!
